The marrow-adhering disease · fu sui bing

Literal
胕髓病 fù suǐ bìng — 胕 is read fù and stands for 附, to adhere; 髓 is the marrow; so the name is 'the disease that clings to the marrow'. Gao Shishi glosses it: the marrow is stored in the bone, hence the name. Zhang Jiebin: the evil lies so deep that it is called the marrow-adhering disease. The chapter gives you the diagnosis before the name — the shank aches severely and cannot be pressed — and then supplies the name, as if the name were the thing you would want once you had recognised it.

In brief

The name the chapter gives to a shank so sore it cannot be touched: the evil has adhered to the marrow. It is the chapter’s deepest and most violent case, treated not with the ordinary needle but with the chisel needle at Cut bone, letting blood — and it is one of the very few conditions in the Suwen to be given a formal name of its own.
