chán zhēn
Also rendered: Chan needle (transliteration; used where the nine-needle system is not explained) · Lance needle (readings that stress 鑱 as a lance; the 靈樞 description is of a broad head, closer to a chisel)

At a glance
One of the nine needles, with a broad, slightly rounded head, used to break into what has gone deep. The chapter calls for it exactly once, for the marrow-adhering disease, and the call is the chapter’s admission that the ordinary needle is not enough. In the phrase that names it, 鍼 appears twice — as the tool and as the act.
Passages where the term does real work, with the original, pinyin and English on the same line.
Every rendering below is a decision about which reader is being addressed. There is no neutral option.
| This site | the chisel needle | follows the 靈樞 description: broad head, slightly rounded, made for draining yang |
