䐜 is the flesh radical with 眞 beside it: the flesh risen, swollen, pushed outward. It is a rare graph — the base text of chapter 29 uses it once, and many printed editions replace it with a more common near-homograph. 滿 is fullness, the sense of being filled to capacity. Together they describe what the chapter says happens when the evil reaches the five depots rather than the six palaces: the belly is distended and full, and everything below is blocked. The contrast the chapter draws is spatial — the palaces give heat and panting above, the depots give distension and flux below.

In brief

Abdominal distension and fullness, the signature of evil that has entered the five depots rather than the six palaces. Chapter 29 sets it in a clean opposition: what yang receives goes to the palaces and produces fever, broken sleep and panting above; what yin receives goes to the depots and produces distension, fullness and blockage, with food-diarrhoea below that in time becomes intestinal flux. The word matters because it is the depot-side sign — the chapter’s whole argument is that the same body, struck from within rather than without, fills up and shuts down instead of heating up and calling out.

How it has been translated

Every rendering below is a decision about which reader is being addressed. There is no neutral option.

Wiseman & Fengdistension and fullnessThey render 䐜 as distension rather than swelling, keeping the pair of sensations rather than collapsing them into one clinical sign.
Unschuldbloating and fullnessUnschuld chooses a plainer, more colloquial word for 䐜, which reads well but sits oddly beside the technical register of the rest of the chapter.
This sitedistension and fullnessWe keep distension: 䐜 is flesh that has risen, and the chapter sets it against heat and panting as the depot-side alternative. Bloating is too domestic for a passage that is drawing a structural contrast between palaces and depots.
