At a glance
The number this chapter arrives at by squaring three: three make heaven, three make earth, three make the human being; three times three is nine; nine divides into the nine regions; and the nine regions answer to nine stores — 形藏四,神藏五. This is not the familiar count of five stores and six receptacles. It is a count made to match the nine-fold division of the sky, and the chapter drops it two lines later for the eleven of 凡十一藏取決於膽.
Passages where the term does real work, with the original, pinyin and English on the same line.
Every rendering below is a decision about which reader is being addressed. There is no neutral option.
| Common English | nine viscera / nine zang organs | Both take 藏 as the organ rather than as what the organ does. |
| This site | the nine stores | 藏 is kept as storing, as it is everywhere on this site. The gloss says why the count is nine here and eleven at the end of the same chapter, so the reader is not tempted to take either for an anatomy. |
