At a glance
The voice of deficiency, set against the raving of repletion. Where 讝語 is loud, coarse and disordered — the patient speaking to no one, seeing what is not there — 鄭聲 is low, weak and repetitive: the same phrase returned to again and again because the spirit has not the strength to go on to a new one. The chapter gives both the pair and the definition in eight characters: ‘in repletion raving, in deficiency the sound of Zheng; the sound of Zheng is repeated speech.’ The name comes from the music of the state of Zheng, which the Analects called excessive; the borrowing is exact, for what is heard is a tune repeated rather than speech that means anything.
Passages where the term does real work, with the original, pinyin and English on the same line.
Every rendering below is a decision about which reader is being addressed. There is no neutral option.
| This site | the sound of Zheng | keeps the borrowed name and its history |
| Literal | Zheng music | exact, but reads as music, not speech |
| Clinical | repeated speech | clear, loses the allusion entirely |
