nüè qì
Also rendered: malaria qi (Reads as the qi of the disease rather than the qi that causes it) · the malaria evil (Says what it is, but 氣 is not 邪 and the chapter uses both words separately)

At a glance
The malarial evil, spoken of as a thing that moves. It lodges at a depth, and that depth decides everything: shallow means it keeps pace with the defensive qi and the fit is daily; deep means it cannot, and the fit comes every other day or every few days. It is exuberant and vacuous by turns, and which it is at a given moment determines heat or cold, a restless or a quiet pulse.
Passages where the term does real work, with the original, pinyin and English on the same line.
Every rendering below is a decision about which reader is being addressed. There is no neutral option.
| Wiseman & Feng | malarial qi | They keep the construction 病名 + 氣, which is how the chapter builds all its qi terms. |
| Unschuld | malaria qi | Unschuld keeps it literal, as he does for the other compound qi of the chapter. |
| This site | malarial qi | We keep qi rather than evil here: the chapter has 邪氣 available and uses it when it wants the evil, so 瘧氣 is doing something more specific — naming the qi of this disease, the thing whose depth and pace the whole chapter is about. |
